2009 GEORGIA SCHOOL BUS SAFETY WEEK - POSTER CONTEST

– 23, 20091. WHO MAY ENTER:
LOCAL LEVEL: Any student, grades K-8, enrolled in a Georgia public school. STATE LEVEL: Each county or city system may submit one poster in each division. The Local Superintendent or Transportation Director must submit state entries.
DIVISION #1: Grades K-2 DIVISION #3: Grades 6-8DIVISION #2: Grades 3-5 DIVISION #4: Special Education
NOTE: ONLY ONE (1) POSTE R IN EACH DIVISION PER SCHOOL SYSTEM.
2. DEADLINE DATE:
Completed poster designs must be received at the office of Pupil Transportation, GaDOE by September 18, 2009. All entries become the property of GAPT, and are not returned. The winning poster in each division will be submitted to the national contest.
3. POSTER SPECIFICATIONS:
Overall poster size must be 11
" x 17" or 12" x 18". There must be a 3" x 5" card/entry blank securely fastened to the back of the poster which includes the student’s name, grade, age, school name, school address, and teacher’s name. Please print clearly. Posters may be illustrated on the vertical or horizontal axis. Do NOT roll posters. They must be mailed/delivered flat.Designs should be submitted on quality tag, poster illustration board or heavy paper. Construction paper may be used, but winning entries must be mounted on quality tag poster. Lamination is not permitted, and will disqualify the poster. Cut paper/stencils (freehand or pre-drawn stick-on stencils) are not permitted and will disqualify the poster.
There is no limitation on the use and number of colors.
There is no limitation on the type of media - such as print, crayon, felt pen, etc. - used on the poster design; however, wood, plastic, glass, or metal should not be a part of the poster. Collage materials should not be used. Glued on pieces will eliminate the poster.
Poster designs may not incorporate any copyright characters (i.e., comic and/or television characters), photographs, and magazine or newspaper illustrations.
4. POSTER THEMES MUST BE ORIGINAL AND CORRECT IN SAFETY CONCEPT:
Poster themes must be original, correct in safety concept and the exclusive work of the student entering
the contest in idea, design, and execution.
Instructors should supervise all work created. Completion of art should be done in school during the month of September. Poster and slogan must harmonize with the theme:
Cross in View, it’s the Right Thing to Do!Contestants must illustrate the above theme only, and the theme must be included on the poster. Illustrations should be positive in approach, demonstrating only proper school bus safety behaviors. At least a part of a yellow school bus must be present in the poster.
5. LETTERING:
Freehand-drawn letters only may be used on the poster design. Stenciled, pre-printed, manufactured stick-on or press-on letters, or tracing of letters may not be used. Lettering should be clearly legible, even if used as part of the poster design.

7. JUDGING:
Posters will be judged by the Georgia Department of Education, comprised of prominent individuals in the fields of elementary education, safety and art. The winning poster will be entered in the National School Bus Safety Week Poster Contest. Poster themes, specifications and divisions are specified by the National Contest Rules.
Criteria for the selection of award-winning posters are:
a. Relationship of the poster design to school bus safety practices.
b. Originality of the poster and how the idea is expressed in the poster design.
c. Art work and its execution.
d. Visual impact of the poster design.
All rules regarding poster specifications, themes, lettering, etc. must be followed. The penalty for non- compliance will be disqualification of the poster.

Payment will be awarded IN EACH OF THE FOUR DIVISIONS as follows:
1st Place - $100
2nd Place - $ 75
3rd Place - $ 50
