Week of October 17, 2010/Conference Week

Hi Parents,

It was great meeting all of the parents this week! Since it is a short week, the Friday report will be short as well ! Hopefully, you have a pretty solid idea of how your child is doing through the conferences. If not, please feel free to e-mail or call! In Reading/Language Arts, the students created their own books to share with their peers this coming Monday. They worked very hard and had great ideas. In Math, we are working on counting and adding coins and dollars! This is an important skill that everyone should have!

Week of October 10, 2010

Hi Parents,

This week, the students worked very hard. In Reading/Language Arts, the students perfected their dictionary skills by defining words and then writing sentences using those words. The students also took turns using the Smartboard to teach their peers decodable words. If their peers did not spell certain words correctly, the students showed them how to “tap out” the words. We had great fun! We also had a great time breaking into reading groups and sharing our own experiences with others. It is important that students are able to “connect” to the text that they read. In Math, we worked on place value. We introduced 100 as a unit! We used math manipulatives so that the students could physically touch the ones, tens, and hundreds cubes. The students really put forth an effort to grasp the concept, but we are going to spend more time on it next week.

Week of October 3, 2010

Hi Parents,

The students had a great week this week. In Reading/Language Arts, we reviewed letter sounds, blends, digraphs, nouns, capitalization, punctuation, main idea, and supporting details. We also engaged in lots of writing. I am happy to say that I am seeing great improvements in the students’ writing. They are becoming more comfortable with the process and yielding better results. Some students are even requesting specific graphic organizers to help with the organization of their thoughts! I am trying to get the students to think critically about what they read and write. “It’s all about the details,” I say. They are apparently listening and applying what they have learned! In math, we are continuing to interpret data on graphs, tell time, and learn the measurements of time. We are having so much fun with learning!

Week of September 26, 2010

Hi Parents,

I hope all the students had a wonderful break this past week. We have gotten back into our routine with lots of review. We reviewed letter sounds, blends, digraphs, nouns, capitalization, punctuation, summarizing, main idea, supporting details and lots of writing. We also reviewed addition, subtraction, and counting money.

We have a wonderful addition to our classroom. Mrs. Bloodsworth, our new paraprofessional, will be providing additional support to the students. We are so excited that she will be joining us!

Week of September 12, 2010

Hi Parents,

This week, we had a wonderful time in Reading and Language Arts. We read the story, Gloria Who Might Be My Best Friend. The story was about Gloria and Julian, who became best friends. Gloria and Julian made kites and attached their wishes to their kites so that they could come true. The kids were so interested in the story that we decided to do an extension activity. The students put their wishes on strips of paper and made kites of their own. They did such a wonderful job! Please make sure you look at your child’s kite. Some made them especially for a loved one! The kites won’t actually fly, but the students will certainly try to make them on Friday! This week in our math class, we continued with addition and subtraction, and began telling time and reading graphs and tables.

Hi Parents,

This week, the students worked very hard. We are continuing to make great progress overall. In our math class, we are continuing to work on single addition and subtraction, as well as two-digit addition with and without regrouping. We are also continuing to work on counting and adding coins. In Reading/Language Arts, we are continuing to work on words with the short “e,” synonyms and antonyms, plural nouns, and consonant digraphs. Don’t forget to work with your child on his or her sight words list. Since sight words don’t follow the rule of phonics, students must practice these words so that they begin to recognize them with automaticity. This helps with reading fluency! You can make flash cards and practice the words each day. Don’t forget to read with your child each night!

Hi Parents,

This first month of school has flown by! The students are really learning a lot. In our math class, we are continuing to work on single-addition and subtraction, as well as two-digit addition with regrouping. We are also working on counting and adding coins. Please have your child look at your loose change around the house and ask them to name the coin and give you its value. Don’t forget to flip the coins because your child needs to recognize the backs of the coins as well. In Reading/Language Arts, we are working on words with the short “e,” synonyms, plural nouns, and consonant digraphs. I am also in the process of assessing reading levels so that we can start reading groups soon! Don’t forget to work with your child on his or her personalized sight words list. Make flash cards and practice the words each day. Don’t forget to read with your child each night. Reading to your child increases vocabulary and stimulates language development.
