Inclement Weather Week

Week of January 4-7

The students had a great first week back. In Language Arts, the students wrote about what they did over the break. Some of the students expressed that they played with new toys, went on vacation, and watched lots of TV! They are in the process of editing their writings so that they can share with their peers. We also had a great time reviewing punctuation, capitalization, grammar, antonyms, synonyms, homonyms, and plurals! Our Explode the Code for the week focused on the blends –sw, -tw, and –st. Our featured story for the week was Harry and Willy and Carrothead. The students really enjoyed this story about children who are born different. In Math, some of the students learned about fractions, numbers to 100, and money concepts.

This week is full of fun activities before the holiday break. Most of the activities are with the students' homeroom teachers, so we will be very flexible!

 

Week of December 5, 2010

We’ve had a fun but busy week. In Language Arts, we wrote about some cool things that the students may see at the zoo. Some of the students said that they had never been to the zoo, so as a class, we shared stories about our own experiences. Those students who had not visited the zoo had enough prior knowledge coupled with their wonderful imaginations to write about it. We also continued to work on punctuation, capitalization, identifying telling or asking sentences, spelling, blends, and overall writing because these skills are so important. We also worked on reading comprehension and retelling skills. We do lots of skill repetition in the classroom so that the students will eventually master the skills. Our featured story this week was, Where Crocodiles Have Wings. The students really enjoyed this unconventional story. The Explode the Code for this week focused on the blends -tr, -fr,-br and -pr. In our math class, we are working on lots of different skills. Some of those skills include counting both dollars and cents, ordering numbers, addition and subtraction, time, and word problems.

Week of November 28, 2010

I am happy to say that the students came back to school ready to work after Thanksgiving break! In our math class, we continued to learn about our shapes, including details about how to differentiate based on the number of sides. We also learned about vertices and edges. We continuously work on money skills, ordering numbers, addition and subtraction, time, and word problems. We address these in our daily warm ups, drills, or SmartBoard activities. In Language Arts, the students had to write about a time in which they needed a band-aid. They either used their imaginations or actual events to tell their tales. They did a great job. The students also wrote about one special person in their lives and explained why they chose that person. The students also shared what they did over Thanksgiving break with their peers. Our featured book for this week was called, Remember, Grandma? The students really seemed to enjoy the story. The Explode the Code for this week focused on the blends -dr, -gr, and -cr.

Week of November 14, 2010

This week in Language Arts, the students reviewed naming parts of sentences, alphabetical order (using their dictionaries to help them), and created books that focused on a specific digraph. They also did some fun Thanksgiving worksheets that made them excited about next week. The Explode the Code for the week focused on the blends –pl, -sl, -sk. In math, we continued to review money concepts, basic addition and subtraction, and subtraction with regrouping. The students also completed some cool math Thanksgiving worksheets.

Week of November 6, 2010

This week in Language Arts, the students edited their stories and created wonderful cover pages. I learned about all of the exciting ways they have been surprised. Some shared experiences about trick-or-treating, visits from loved ones and presents received for birthdays and holidays. They will share their stories with their friends very soon! We have been diligently working with the students on writing using the correct capitalization and punctuation. We have also been learning lots of grammar rules. The Explode the Code for this week focused on the consonant blends, -bl, -cl, -fl, and -gl. In our math class, we are working on lots of different things. Some of the students are ordering numbers, subtracting with regrouping, and counting dollars and coins. We are also doing timed fact tests to increase math fluency skills.

Week of October 31, 2010

This week in Language Arts, the students wrote about a time when they were very surprised. The students used graphic organizers to help them generate their ideas. We also used the 5 W’s (who, what, when, where, and why) to make sure the students included important details. We are in the editing and revising stage right now. The students will share their writing with their peers on next week. The students also did Explode the Code for all the vowel sounds, sentence correction, singular/plural nouns and grammar exercises. We have had a busy week! The students are also having a great time in reading groups with their peers or one-on-one! In our math class, we are doing lots of different things. Some of the students are adding and subtracting single digits, while others are adding and subtracting with regrouping! I explain to the students that our class is so much more exciting because we sometimes do different things! :)
