Week 23

It’s hard to believe it’s already the end of February. We have been very busy this week. The children enjoyed our unit on fractions and especially liked creating Fraction Town. We began our measurement unit.  We learned about inches, feet, yards, and miles and how to measure with a ruler correctly. The children did well as they measured several objects found in the classroom. We will move onto the metric system next.

 The children have enjoyed checking the phases of the moon each day. We also learned about shadows. Wednesday we went outside at different times of the day and traced the shadow of a toilet tissue roll. The children found it interesting to see the changes of the shadow.

On Thursday we had a visit from Wellstar. The children learned about dental health from a program called “Smile Power”. They were given a brand new toothbrush to keep at home.

 Valentine’s Day was Riley and Christopher’s birthday. We celebrated Christopher’s birthday on February 14 and Riley’s on February 15. Kaleb’s birthday was Wednesday. The class enjoyed all the birthday treats. 

 The children had a great time distributing their valentines to their classmates and opening their boxes on Monday afternoon. Thank you, Mrs. Harris, for the delicious Valentine cookies.

 If you did not return the music performance note today, please send it back the day we return to school (Feb. 28). Mr. Savage would like to know, as soon as possible, which children will not be participating in the program.

 I’ve heard that many of you are traveling over the break. I hope you have a safe and fun trip. Those that are staying home – rest and relax! We all need to gear up for the last part of second grade

Week 22

We had another enjoyable week in second grade! We’re almost at the end of our fraction unit. The children have enjoyed the different activities we’ve done. We made “Fraction Town” on Monday .

Have you observed the moon with your child? I know the weather hasn’t been very cooperative, but we have had a few good nights/mornings to see the different phases. We’ve also learned why we have day and night.

 We are moving right along with our research project. Some students are in the proofreading stage and others are almost done putting their information into their Power Point and selecting pictures for the slides.

In our Classroom Guidance lesson this week, the children learned what they can do when they are angry. They talked about acceptable and unacceptable ways to express their anger.

 Alice was Caught with Character for Resilience for the month of January. Way to go, Alice!! Timothy was our Citizen of the Week. The pictures on his poster were really neat! He shared his Pine Box Derby car and other treasures with the class.

The children participated in Jump Rope for Heart today. Thank you all for supporting this very worthwhile program.

Week 21

We’ve just completed another productive week of learning.  We worked on fractions. The children are able to write the fraction for a part of a whole, part of a group, and can also compare fractions.

 The children have done a good job of writing their reports in PowerPoint using their notes.  We have been going to the computer lab to do the work. Not only have they learned information about their animal, but they also have learned how to use PowerPoint and to select pictures. Some have found they needed a little more notes to write a good paragraph. When they are done, they will present their report to the class

 Even though the children have not been able to actually observe the moon so far this month, we have found the phases online. Hopefully, the weather will clear up and they will be able to see how the moon changes. We have also discussed the stars and their characteristics. The children created their own constellations and wrote a story about it.

 Jack was our Citizen of the Week. We enjoyed looking at the pictures on his poster, meeting Ellie, his Saint Bernard, and seeing pictures of his great grandfather and the dragon from China.

 We enjoyed watching the dress rehearsal of the Timber Ridge Juggling Show yesterday. The jugglers did a fabulous job!
