Week 30

Happy Earth Day! We’ve explored the life cycle of the plant. We’re watching and waiting for a bean seed to germinate. When it does, we will be able to see the various parts of a plant. We also looked inside the bean seed and were able to see the seed coat, stored food, and embryo. We’re looking forward to learning about other life cycles.

 Math finds us reviewing time to 5 minute intervals, and place value. We also worked on addition and subtraction with and without regrouping. Please keep practicing those math facts!!

We are also reviewing multiplication and division.

We’re continuing our work with persuasive writing. The children are doing a good job of writing convincing paragraphs.

 We celebrated Adam’s birthday on Thursday with delicious cupcakes. Happy Birthday, Adam! Derek was our Citizen of the Week. We enjoyed the photographs on his poster, souvenirs from China, his baseball trophies, and his coin from the Philadelphia Mint.  Lillian and Alice presented the weather on TRNN this morning. They did a great job! Cole D. was caught with character for commitment. Way to go, Cole D.! Thanks to Ms. Leonard for our delicious Earth Day treats.

 Mark your calendars for Chick-Fil-A night, next Thursday, April 28^th. Proceeds from your purchases help to benefit the Timber Ridge Foundation. I will be serving free ice cream between 5:30 and 6:00. Hope to see you there.

Week29

It’s been a beautiful week!  In anticipation of the arrival of our butterfly larva, we have begun learning about the life cycle of the butterfly. It will be so much more meaningful when the children actually observe the various stages of the life cycle.

 We are continuing our study of multiplication and division. The children seem to have a good understanding of these concepts. We are also focusing on place value in the thousands.

 In Social Studies, we concluded our unit on Jimmy Carter and government. We discussed the roles of the President, governor, and mayor. The children are also able to identify our state and national capitol buildings in Atlanta and Washington, D.C. They can also locate the capital of Georgia and the United States on a map.

 The children are doing a good job with their persuasive writing.  They wrote a paragraph persuading me to promote them to third grade!  We will continue to focus on persuasive writing for the next few weeks.

 Our Citizen of the Week was Sammi. We enjoyed looking at the photos on her poster. She enjoyed sharing her ribbons, gemstones, owl statue, and other favorite things.

Week 28

We had a very busy week. We continued working on multiplication. We reviewed arrays and groups. This week we focused on using the multiplication table and number lines. We also worked on dividing numbers into equal groups and repeated subtraction. The children are very excited about these topics.

 During social studies, we continued to read about Jimmy Carter. We discussed his concerns for equal rights and humanity and how it has impacted our state, country, and world.

 Our writing focus these nine weeks is persuasive writing. The children enjoyed the book I Wanna Iguana. They identified examples of how the boy in the book tried to convince his mom to let him have a pet. As you can imagine, most of the children could really identify with the boy!!

 This week Jordyn was our Citizen of the Week. We enjoyed learning more about her as she shared some of her favorite things with the class. Thank you for sharing your beautiful water color paintings, trophies, music box, and pillow pet. On Monday, we celebrated Alice’s birthday with delicious cinnamon muffins. Her actual birthday was February 25. Today we celebrated Stephanie’s April 2^nd birthday with a variety of types of doughnuts. Happy Birthday Alice and Stephanie! Riley also participated in the Science Fair last week. Her exhibit was Rocks. Great job!
